Question of the day:

"Are we sad because we listen to sad music? Or do we listen to sad music because we are sad?"

We listen to sad music because we're sad...and then we tend to feel worst because the music gets into us, into our mind and gives us the blues.
Maybe we feel connected to sad music because we feel that we're not alone, someone has felt exactly as we do, before...and sometimes it helps.

So you think feeling sad is step #1?

I think we tend to listen to more sad music when we feel sad, because, as you said, it's good to "know" someone who's feeling the same way.

But I don't know if sometimes, listening to the very same type of music is not conductive to feeling sad.

I guess...if you listen to sad music tou may get influenced by it, the same way a friend is sad and you become sad because of his/hers sadness.

The thing is: I listen to music accordingly with my mood. When I am happy and full of joy, I like to listen to more cheerfull songs. The opposite is also true: feeling sad makes me listen to sad music because why would I want to listen to lively music that will only make me feel more miserable?

Ok.

I think everyone chooses acordingly with the mood.

But in that case, there is a lot of sad people in this world...

I suppose there are...or maybe, just maybe, we just make our problems bigger than they actualy are.It could be that the song writers create sad songs to help them get through something and when we see ourselves in what they write, we perpetuate the feeling.

I don't think we make them bigger. Each person as a scale, and each problem is big or small relative to the person's life experience. I think it's wrong to think "there are worse things in the world", because we don't really care about that, in that moment.

I think songwriters help a lot, but we cannot let them rule our lives. And that's the hardest part.

Yeah, I also believe it is wrong to think "there are worse things in the world" because 1)it does not make us feel better; 2) we don't show respect by other ppl's problems & feelings

About songwriters 'rulling' our lives, I reckon it is hard, as you said, to don´t get affected by it and don´t get emotioned with songs and mix what we feel with what we are hearing. Like having a friend that is said: because he/she is sad you will be sad with him/her.
